Patterned after our friends, the Seven Hills Running Club in Huntsville, we intend to recognize all of our runners who have completed a marathon or longer.  Distances run more than 26.2 miles are ultramarathons.  As an example, a 50K is 31 miles long.  Congratulations to all of our members who have accomplished what nearly 99 percent of runners will not complete.

Just Another Race Weekend in Volte, USA; Volte Youngsters Conclude 2021 XC Seasons

Despite being one week into a four-week gap between Texas 10 Series races and with a large number of athletes still recovering from fall marathons and Ironman competitions, Volte still had a good number of athletes competing this past weekend.

A half dozen of our athletes traveled north to compete in the Seven Hills Running Club's 42nd annual Huntsville Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5K.

The half marathon is one of the oldest races at its distance in the state of Texas.

Crossing the unified (start and) finish line was coach Layton Gill, who won his age group with a time of 24:46 and was fifth overall.

In the quarter marathon, which was one loop of the two-loop half marathon course, it was good to see both Ruth Perez and Letty Gonzalez out racing with us.

Both of them took first place in their respective age group.  

Ruth ran it in 1:07:49 while Letty, who was excited to be running her first race in two years, did so in 1:34:29.

Volte friend Ken Johnson of the Seven Hills Running Club won his division in 1:46:19, but not without a little excitement -- and concern.

"About a quarter mile from the start, I tripped on some very rough asphalt and took a very hard fall," Ken reported on his blog.  "I cut up my forehead, elbow, knee and hands.  I probably looked bad, but I kept going, washing the blood off the best I could with water from an aid station."

While it looked, when Johnson finished, worse than what it turned out to be, he did visit the local ER post-race and had X-rays taken to ensure nothing had broken during the fall.

Rob Gay was the first across the line of our three competitors in the half marathon.

He was fourth overall in a time of 1:45:24, allowing him to win his age group by less than a minute.

Setting a two-minute personal best, over her time from this past March's The Woodlands Half Marathon, was Kyley Hampton, who broke two hours with a showing of 1:58:37.

With as much steadiness as she displayed in singing the National Anthem before the race, Waverly Walk ran even splits on her way to her 16th career half marathon finish and a second place age group award.

Walk praised Advice For Eating registered dietitian Catherine Kruppa for her success as she hadn't covered the distance at all since April when she ran the Blue Bell Half Marathon with her father.

“Thank you for your wisdom in fueling for the race! I felt great," she told Kruppa post race of her 2:22:57.8 effort where she went 1:11:26.8 on the first half and a second faster on the second loop.

Volte friend Mark Amann won his second overall Huntsville Half Marathon title with a mark of 1:17:36 while Vincent Attanucci was second in his age group in 2:28:57.

Speaking of Dads and daughters, Mike Csikos ran with his daughter Micahela, currently a student at Texas A&M University, during the BCS Oktoberfest Half Marathon in College Station on Sunday.

They ran the course together in 2:07:35.  

Faith Craig, a regular at this race, finished in 2:22:25.

Our friends did well, including Paul Blutt who was first in his age group in 1:25:26 and one of Volte's first coaches, Adrienne Langelier, who was the first overall female finisher in 1:29:16.

On Sunday, Stephen Lopez completed a marathon in his 27th state with a 5:51:38 finish at the Des Moines Marathon in Iowa.

And a marathon finish that escaped us with Ramon Rosales' 2:44:17 at last Monday's Boston Marathon.

Friday and Saturday, Kim White, Julie Stevenson and a pair of Volte friends Erika Lawton and Mariela Rodriguez competed the 120-mile Ragnar Trail Texas Relay in Comfort, Texas.

As part of the "Team Day Drinkers", they covered the three loop course at the Flat Rock Ranch - where the loops were anything but flat - in 25 hours, 52 minutes and 52 seconds for a very respectable 12:56 per minute pace throughout the event.

What was unique about this specific Ragnar Relay and venue is that each runner had to do each of the three loops, which were rated "easiest", "intermediate" and "hardest"

And while the adults were having their fun, our Volte youngsters were putting the finishing touches on their 2021 cross country seasons.

On Friday morning, the UIL District 13-6A cross country championships were held at the Texas National Golf Club in Willis.

Volte's Chloe Kramer-Caamano, the daughter of our Mayra Caamano, who was celebrating a birthday on race day, competed in the JV Girls 5K race for The Woodlands College Park and finished in 23:22.

The Woodlands' Stoya Laydevant, who ran with us on Tuesday night track during the late spring and summer, was fourth overall in the Varsity Girls 5K race with a time of 19:22.  

The Highlanders will advance with The Woodlands College Park and Conroe Grand Oaks to the UIL 6A Region II meet the Monday and Tuesday after next.

Some community shout-outs include:

+ Conroe Oak Ridge's Raul Luzardo, the son of the local Ironman triathlete by the same name, ran 18:23 in the Varsity Boys 5K race.

+ Conroe Oak Ridge's Minnie Beedle, the daughter of Texas 10 Series race announcer Nathan Beedle, finished the Varsity Girls 5K race in 23:42.

+ The Woodlands' Jae Green, the daughter of TWHS' boys and girls head cross country and track and field coach Juris Green, was 12th overall in the Varsity Girls 5K race in 20:43.

+ The Woodlands College Park had three daughters of Volte friend Erica Falcon - and the former head of Falcon Fit - competing:  Olivia was 10th overall in the Varsity Girls 5K race in 20:08, Juliana was 9th overall in the JV Girls 5K race in 22:23 and Grace was 14th overall in the Girls 2-mile race in 15:28.

+ The Woodlands' Sarah Rothe, the daughter of local Ironman athlete Melissa Rothe, ran 15:09 for 9th place in the Girls 2-mile race.

+ The Woodlands' Jack Whitehead, the daughter of Volte friend and former Woodlands Fit coach Beth Whitehead, ran the Open Boys 5K race in 18:07, while Luke Tresaugue, the daughter of Volte alumni Jill, also ran the Open Boys 5K race in 19:31.

On Saturday morning at the Conroe ISD Middle School District championships, Brayden Park, the son of Jerritt and Kristi Park, was third overall on Saturday in the eighth grade boys race.

He ran the two-mile distance in 11:15.80 and was the McCullough Highlanders top runner, behind runners from York and Irons, who finished first and second.

McCullough easily won the district championship over York Junior High with 23 points to York's 49 points.

Brooke Kramer-Caamano, the daughter of our Mayra Caamano, ran for Knox Junior High in the eighth grade girls race and ran the two miles in 14:52.77.

Knox was second behind McCullough, who scored a perfect 15 points for finishing in the top five positions, and led third place York by 18 points.

Maddison Hanyzewski, the daughter of Brian and Laura Hanyzewski, ran in the eighth grade open girls race for McCullough Junior High and was seventh overall in a time of 14:25.40.

Some community shout-outs include:

+ The son and daughter of TJ and Amy Fry, Andrew and Megan Fry competed for Knox Junior High in the seventh grade boys and eighth grade girls races.  

Andrew was 10th overall in 12:12.43, while Megan was just 10 seconds and two spots behind Kramer-Caamano in 15:02.27.  

Their Dad swam for McCullough HS (before it was known as The Woodlands HS), Clemson University and is probably The Woodlands' greatest triathlete ever, qualifying for Kona in three different decades.

+ Miles Delzer, the son of Vantage Point Endurance founder Ronnie Delzer and his wife Stefanie, ran in the eighth grade open boys race in 14:13.20.

Volte Put All Hands On Deck For Historic Race Weekend

This weekend, perhaps one of the most historic here in our endurance sports community with Ironman Texas, the Chicago Marathon and the Boston Marathon on three consecutive days, was a total Volte team effort.

While we had our athletes and friends competing in each of these major events, there was a lot of support and love shown to all of them.

From being an athlete's sherpa to chalking up a few sidewalks.

From handing out water in an aid station to banging a drum (wait, we weren't embedded with Hippie Hollow, were we?)

Alright, maybe then putting up a tent on Sunday morning.

From fixing one's hair (yes, this was a pre-race thing on Saturday) to giving a COVID-safe fist bump or even safer, a hearty cheer.

Luke said, "... For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required:  and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more."

We've all been given very much and many exercised all they had this past weekend.

Early in the day Saturday at Barry Blanton's "Some Like It Hot!" run course aid station, an Ironman Texas volunteer came by to check on his daughter-in-law and grandson, who were both helping out there.

He's an athlete who has done - and seen - it all.

From finishing the Western States 100 and winning his age group at Kona in the same calendar year (1990) to running both the 5K and 10K this year at The Woodlands Marathon at the age of 85, Jim Braden once shared some sage advice with this scribe that I thought might be appropriate here.

He shared once, "We're all equal if we're doing our best."

Fate and circumstances could have clouded the look in from the outside as failure.  

However, within that prism of "doing our best", failure - in the eyes of Volte - was nowhere to be found.

Volte is a group of runners, right?  

But some destined to write another chapter in our group's history to join Landa Wright as a Volte Ironman.

And in what might have been the longest preparation for an Ironman on record, after COVID cancelled Ironman Texas last year, teased an October move to Waco and then slammed out of this past April by Harris County, our four Ironman-seeking athletes - Paolo Biagi, Tammy Grado, Yaya Herrera and Gabby Westbrook - persevered in their chance to navigate the dirty waters of Lake Woodlands with many new acquaintances from around Texas, US and lesser than 2019, the world.

However, the man-made lake, which was excavated in 1984 and saw its official opening in 1985, figuratively challenged our athletes like the ships tossed at sea in Shakespeare's "The Tempest".

Gabby led us out of the water in 1:44:13, followed by Yaya in 1:48:43, Tammy in 2:01:37 and Paolo in 2:22:15.

The lake didn't spit Paolo out into transition until two minutes and 15 seconds after the mandatory cut off time for the swim portion of the event had passed.

However, Ironman race officials would allow Paolo to continue, but his eventual finish would be official to him - and in our hearts and minds.

After logging so many training miles together, it almost seemed like they were riding the course together when you looked at the team's bike times.

Yaya covered the 112 miles in 7:02:50, while Paolo and Gabby followed in times of 7:08:36 and 7:09:36, respectively.

And that left Tammy, stranded on the Hardy Toll Road.

Through the 19.5 mile checkpoint, Tammy was averaging 14.62 miles per hour, according to Ironman's tracker app.

She was told by an Ironman official, after having to stop as a result of some nausea, that she had to be off the bike course by a certain time, which wouldn't be possible to make.  However, after vacating the course, Tammy realized that it was really that she needed to be at mile 80 by that time -- a big difference that cost her the opportunity to continue.

While she was unable to continue, Yaya, Gabby and Paolo advanced to the run course where Yaya led the way with a 4:47:08 marathon followed by Paolo's 5:24:46 and Gabby's 5:49:04.

Overall, Yaya finished in 14:00:07, Gabby in 15:08:57 and Paolo in 15:12:15.

Volte friend Shannon Truman, who logged many, many training miles with our crew -- and who all trained under the guidance of Sandra Sutherland's TXTRI leadership, finished in 12:41:14 with a 1:24:26 swim, 6:07:47 bike and 4:45:51 run.

While our friends were going long in The Woodlands on Saturday, October 9, 2021 the Murillo family competed in the Mission Tejas Trail Run in Grapeland.

Luis took second overall in the 25K in 2:19:46 while Juan finished the 50K in 5:37:18 and their father Jose went the same distance in 7:48:53.

Galveston played host to Michael Gayle and Scott and Leticia Haney Saturday morning as they ran in the Galveston Island Brewing Co 5K Beer Run, which was primarily along the Galveston Seawall.

Michael outsprinted Scott to the finish by five seconds as he posted a nice time of 26:43 for third in his 40-49 year old age group, keeping Scott off the podium.  

Leticia also missed the podium, like her husband, by one spot with a time of 30:53.

It seems kind of simple, but only a marathoner can understand finishing a marathon easily.

Our Christopher and Stephanie Reed did just that on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.

After bagging their Boston qualifiers at Tunnel Light Marathon last month, the couple - with Christopher running his second marathon ever - accomplished their goals of running the race together, taking in the event, not getting in a hurry and enjoying.

They ran through the first half in 1:59:45 and finished together in a time of 4:16:33.

At Sunday's Cypress 10 Miler, the second race of the 2021-2022 Texas 10 Series, we had athletes - and friends - who competed in all three of the Series' distances -- the 5K, the 5-miler and the marquee 10-mile distance.

Coach Layton Gill got the fun started with a seventh place overall finish in the 5K in 25:17, while Coach Rich Cooper was the first one across the line for us in the 5-miler in 48:33 - and in a tough 50-59 division.

Randy Bradley led all of our Volte friends in the five-miler in 55:12, followed by Ray and Dianna Sarno who ran together in 59:09 and Ken Johnson in 1:20:33.

In the 10-miler, Darren Hadden led us with a fourth place overall finish - second men's master - in 1:05:50 while Jerritt Park and Rob Gay crossed the line next in 1:13:46 and 1:22:36, respectively.

Winning her age group in her first ever 10-miler was Maria Sanchez, who did so with a time of 1:25:02, and was followed by Kyley Hampton in a time of 1:34:07.

Todd Hunter rounded out our crew with a planned pedestrian finish of 2:02:24.

Leading our Volte friends was overall winner Mark Amann, who won his ninth Texas 10 Series race and seventh straight, as he stopped the clock in 57:16 followed by Lou Bouanga, who was second overall in 1:00:34.

Paul Blutt continued the glasswear grab as he finished second in his 40-44 age grop in 1:10:51, while Erin Gowton took second in her age group in 1:35:05 and her husband Jimmie ran well with a mark of 1:50:47.

Then, of course, on Monday, there was Boston.

The 125th running.

Roger King led our parade down Boylston, finishing in 3:27:18 and was the first of the four first-time Boston finishers from our group.

After a pair of qualifiers at The Woodlands Marathon, Devyn Cook finally fulfilled a goal she had since she started running in 2008 to run the Boston Marathon, coming away with a time of 4:04:27.

Sandra Tezino and Laura Godfrey were the next two as they journeyed to Boston for the fourth straight race, starting in 2017, and ended with times of 4:13:44 and 4:23:27, respectively.

Robert King and Trudy Regnier, who both got into this year's race late in the game, finished in 4:24:12 and 5:23:59, respectively.

Early Saturday morning, Chris Branch and Judith Albarran got their virtual Boston Marathon completed - before Monday's main event -  in 4:43:23 and 4:55:35, an easy long run that came with a few stops mixed in to cheer for Ironman Texas competitors, while Carrie Hyde got hers done, eh, in Canada in 4:58:10.

Four of our Volte friends were all close together in time in Boston on Monday.

Erika Park was running her last Boston Marathon.  She finished her fourth Boston, including a virtual one a year ago, in 3:29:53, which bettered her debut Boston time of 3:41:49 in 2017.

Terence Baptiste bettered his 2019 debut time of 3:44:05 in Boston with a fine showing on Monday of 3:34:18.

Running in Beantown for the very first time was Josh Rivas, who was one of 77 BQs at March's The Woodlands Marathon to finish Boston this year and left Massachusetts with a time of 3:42:06.

And Sonia Dhodapkar, who ties the tongues of most race announcers, finished her third career Boston Marathon in 3:46:05.

The best we save for last.

A great friend to our founder and scribe - and who is more involved in endurance sports than just about anybody you can think of - completed an Ironman Texas and Boston Marathon double this weekend.

Waco's Nancy Goodnight, who is the race director of the Miracle Match Marathon there and just a force of nature, completed her 10th Ironman Texas - the only woman to do so - on Saturday in 12:03:33, winning her a Kona spot as she took her division.

Then she arrived just a little after midnight on Monday morning before proceeding to run a 3:41:44 marathon -- her 11th Boston and sixth IMTX/Boston double but the first time in reverse.

Volte Middle and High Schoolers Compete Well Despite Nike South's Muddy Course

Friday and Saturday was the annual Nike South Invitational cross country meet at Bear Branch Sports Park.

A little over 2,500 athletes from seventh to the twelfth grade competed for one of 22 middle schools or 62 high schools.

A year ago, because of the UIL's COVID-19 mitigation protocols, the middle school athletes weren't allowed to compete at Nike South.  

The UIL had required that junior high and high school meets be held on separate days.  It ended up costing a lot of middle school athletes the opportunity to compete.

The sons and daughters of many of our athletes and friends competed.

Normally, the distances are two miles for the middle school athletes and five kilometers for the high school runners, but due to heavy rains mid-week the courses were adjusted and rumored to be 1.75 and 2.88 miles, respectively.

In the eighth grade boys race, the only son of a Volte athlete was Brayden Park.

His dad and mom, Jerritt and Kristi Park, both run with us.

He was seventh overall in a field of 150 runners - and was fifth overall on his school's team.  If the 1.75 miles was an accurate estimation, his pace would have been about 6:02 per mile in the wet and muddy conditions.

The children of a few of our Volte friends ran in this race.

Jack Tresaugue, the son of Volte friend Jill Tresaugue, was second overall.

Also competing was Miles Delzer, the son of Volte friends Ronnie and Stefanie Delzer.  Ronnie is one of the founders of Vantage Point Endurance.

The eighth grade girls race featured three daughters of our runners.

Two of them - Madi Hanyzewski and Brooke Kramer-Caamano - finished within three tenths of a second of each other!

Madi, the daughter of Brian and Laura Hanyzewski, finished in 13:29.1 - about a 7:42 mile pace on a 1.75-mile course, while Kramer-Caamano, the daughter of our Mayra Caamano, was just a step behind, but she was the seventh fastest runner for her junior high.

Making continued improvements in her running was Brooke Hadden, the daughter of Darren Hadden, who finished in 15:40.9, an 8:58 pace.

On Saturday morning in the varsity non-elite girls races, where there were two races and 256 runners were included in the results, Chloe Kramer-Caamano, Brooke's older sister, was second among her school's runners in 19:23, which equated to a 6:44 pace.

Her and her teammate who finished in front of her both had times that were faster than their school's seventh place runner in the elite race, racing in the same course conditions.

Luke Tresaugue, the older brother of Jack and a sophomore at his high school, ran the "5K" course in 17:25 - 49th of 184 runners in two combined races.

Stoya Laydevant, a freshman at The Woodlands High School who trained with us at the track during the spring and summer, finished 23rd overall in the girls elite race.  

She was the Highlanders' third runner on a squad that finished second to Flower Mound.

Racing Around The "World" in September With Volte

We might be stretching things just a little, but just go with Nine Volte here.

There's probably a good half dozen to 10 races in Texas that you should do before your running days are over.

One of them is the Polish Pickle Run 5K in Bremond.

For the uninitiated, that's pronounced "Bre" - as in free and Memorial Hermann Ten For Texas women's winner Bree Fontentot - mond (like in pond).

After the pandemic cancelled the 2020 version and lack of organizing interest nearly wiped this year's race, moved from the last Saturday in June, off the books, the race's numbers took a severe hit.

In 2019, just under 600 runners, including 94 in the Clydesdale and Fillie divisions, finished the race, but this year only 258 crossed the finish line.

Yet, we had our people there.

Kim White won his age group in 22:17 while Julie Stevenson was the first female Senior runner in 23:42.

Our friends got in the "winning" act too.

One of Volte's original coaches Adrienne Langelier was the women's overall winner in a time of 18:54.

The remaining three friends also earned podium spots - on their way to a weekend double of races.

Erin Gowton won her age group in 25:59 while her husband Jimmie was third in his in 29:20.  

Ken Johnson won his division in 43 minutes even.

That same day in Paris, not France, but east Texas, the Murillos were tearing up the Paris Pair Trail Run.

Juan won the 50K race in 4:42:28 while his brother Luis was first in the 25K in 1:38:39.

Their father, Jose, covered the 25K distance in 2:27:38.

Sienna, the vehicle produced by Toyota, is named for the Italian city of Siena in the Tuscany region.

And Sienna Plantation had similar roots, according to the siennatx.com website.

There it explains that "Lillian and Stella Scanlan - two of seven unmarried daughters who had inherited the substantial estate of Thomas H. Scanlan, the former Mayor of Houston from 1870-1873 -  dismantled and utilized materials from their family mansion at 1917 Main Street to build a plantation house in 1937 following a dispute with the City of Houston over the removal of a giant oak tree along the road. They named the property Sienna Plantation, for Siena in the Tuscany region of Italy and possibly because St. Catherine of Siena is the patron saint of single women." 

We had a light crew that ran well at Texas 10 Sienna on Sunday to kickoff the 2021-2022 Texas 10 Series.

In the 5K, Jane Campbell finished second in her age group in 24:07 while her son Simon, just seven years of age running in the 14-Under category, also earned a second place age group award in a time of 31:04, which was a new personal best for him.

Coach Rich Cooper was the only Volte athlete to run the five-mile race, doing so in 45:43.

Darren Hadden led the way in the marquee event distance - the 10-miler - with an age group winning time of 1:02:38 - just two weeks after a sterling showing at the Tunnel Light Marathon.

He was followed across the line by Jerritt Park, who won his age group with a new personal record time of 1:09:09.

Imagine a guy who works for one car company running his fastest time in a race that's the name of a car of a competitor.  Maybe that's why he ran so fast there!

Rob Gay rounded out our team, stopping the clock in 1:19:27.

We had ten friends -- five at each of the two longer distances - run on Sunday too.

In the five-miler, Alvaro and Lusi Trejo finished in 48:18 and 52:21, respectively, while Ray and Dianna Sarno ran together in 58 minutes even.

Ray won his division while Huntsville's Ken Johnson was second in his in 1:13:21.

Mark Amann won his sixth straight Texas 10 race, his third straight Sienna 10 and eighth Texas 10 race in history -- with a winning time of 56 minutes even.

Lu Bouanga was third overall and won his age group in 58:32.

Erin and Jimmie Gowton completed their weekend double of races -- a half marathon with a 24-hour break in between -- with performances of 1:36:55 and 1:48:25, respectively.

Randy Bradley got his 10 miles done in 1:39:38.

A good sign for the Texas 10 Series, aside from the 1-mile race, which was not timed, the race had 383 finishers among the three distances, which was third among the six races (starting in 2016) in Sienna Plantation.  

The inaugural year was the largest with 539 finishers and the 2019 running, also run in September, was second with 482.

Catching up with our younger athletes, Madi Hanyzewski and Brooke Kramer-Caamano competed for their schools in the Knox Junior High Invitational on Friday, September 10, 2021.

Madi, the daughter of Brian and Laura Hanyzewski, finished the two-mile distance in 15:14 while Kramer-Caamano, the daughter of Mayra Caamano, was just three places behind in 15:32.

Jack Tresaugue, the son of Volte friend Jill Tresaugue, was eighth in the boys' two-miler in 12:40, while Miles Delzer, the son of Ronnie and Stefanie Delzer, ran the distance in 14:55.

The Woodlands High School freshman Stoya Laydevant, who ran with us during the spring and summer at track on Tuesday nights, has gotten off to an impressive start of her high school cross country career.

After finishing 10th in the 4000 meters at Friday Night Lights on August 27 in 15:41.3, Stoya has added a pair of fourth-place overall finishes at Atascosita on September 3 and the Region III Preview meet in Huntsville on September 18 in 19:18 and 19:14.3, respectively.

In between, she recorded her fastest 5K time of 19:13.8 at the Garmin Milesplit Invitational in a very deep, competitive field.

On Saturday, September 11, 2021, Brooke Hadden, the daughter of Darren Hadden, ran the two-mile distance at the Magnolia Run The Pound Invitational in 19:50.3, bettering her season-opening time of 20:23 the week before.

And this past Saturday, Chloe Kramer-Caamano was ninth overall in the two-mile JV race at the Texas A&M High School Invitational in a personal best time of 13:23.

Volte Was The Light At The End Of The Tunnel

The website Grammarist tells us that “a light at the end of the tunnel is an idiom that dates back at least to the 1880s.”

They go on to explain that the phrase was found in old newspapers and other publications during that time as a metaphor for hope.

Am pretty sure that journalists 140 years ago couldn’t have realized just how much hope was needed by some runners when they exited the tunnel at the Tunnel Light Marathon knowing that they still had a little over 23 miles to go.

Fake news, for sure.

For the fifth consecutive year that the race has been run (not counting 2020, of course, when the race was cancelled by the pandemic), Volte has had runners make the journey to North Bend, Washington.

Laura Godfrey and Sandra Tezino were the first ones drawn to the Light in 2016 and while not everybody has been able to rub the BQ or PR out of the Tunnel Light bottle, nearly everyone has felt accomplished from having survived training in the Texas heat and humidity.

While the tally of running’s most recognizable alphabet letters is important, the positivity and camaraderie shared by this year’s group - particularly - easily formed a smile across founder Bill Dwyer’s face.

At times during the trip, Dwyer shared that he thought the heavens might open in chords of Kum-ba-ya, but God’s angels must have had choir practice elsewhere.

You couldn’t have asked for a better result to lead us than Robert King’s 2:54:10, good for second in his age group.

Here’s a guy that was split off like a broken wishbone from his brother by the Boston Athletic Association when the time needed under the qualifying standard went right between their finishing times at The Woodlands Marathon.

Robert and Roger King's sub three-hour marathon performances were so dizzying a runner's wife from Pittsburgh couldn't figure out until close to the end that it was two of them that kept passing her husband.

While even better than Optima Tax Relief’s Fresh Start Initiative, the B.A.A.’s reach out to runners who barely missed the qualifying standard, which also got to Trudy Regnier for her 2019 Tunnel Light showing, will have Robert joining Roger in Beantown in a couple of weeks.

He took eight minutes and 15 seconds off his debut marathon at The Woodlands in March – and has a 15:50 cushion under the standard for 2022.

Roger wasn’t too far behind.

Both broke Volte’s all-time marathon best at Tunnel Light set by Derek Bailey in 2017 with his 3:04:40.

He was third in his age group and broke three hours for the first time ever in 2:58:53.

Darren Hadden also slipped under the former Volte standard with a showing of 3:03:02 – not too far off his 2:59:04 at the 2011 Marine Corps Marathon.  

He, however, is nearly 17 minutes under his age group’s Boston Marathon qualifying standard and it sounded like listening to him Tuesday night at track that his wife was entering him at the first available opportunity.

One of five runners to qualify for Boston for the first time, Chris Branch – like most of the crew that traveled to Washington state – had an excellent training cycle – and it showed.

Chris Branch was either so focused or knew that he was going to rob the PR bank here at the half way point.

Chris cashed in a time of 3:10:28, slicing a little more than 15 minutes from 3:26:02 performance at the 2019 St. George Marathon in Utah.

Must be something about four-letter last names and debut marathons.

Chris Reed replicated that combination from Roger and Robert King and their efforts at The Woodlands Marathon in March to post a debut, Boston qualifying time of 3:15:08.

Gee Chris, you're supposed to be grimacing more on your debut marathon! 

He’s four minutes and 52 seconds under the Boston qualifying standard – and may have to make another go of it to get under far enough to gain entry.

The folks back home were yelling, “Run Granny Run!”

After Erika Sampson’s 3:27:44 performance, good for third in her age group, she easily could be running’s next Grandmama, reprising Larry Johnson’s role in the 1990’s sitcom, “Family Matters”.

All business for Erika until she got her Boston ticket at the finish line!

It was the former Houston Cougars’ second marathon ever – a mere one hour, 54 minutes and 10 seconds faster than the first, her first Boston Qualifier and she might have broken Boston’s qualifying standard curve with a time that is more than 22 minutes under her standard for 2022.

That fierce, determined flyer down the trail that everyone saw was Stephanie Reed.

Well, OK, Stephanie took a second to break from that fierce, determined role on her way to a sub 3:30 marathon!

She and Erika became only the third and fourth Volte female runners to break 3:30 as she shaved nearly 12 minutes off her 2020 Houston Marathon time with a showing of 3:29:28 – her first Boston Marathon qualifying time.

Jason Bodie was the second of our three debut marathoners to cross the finish line, doing so in 3:35:49.

After swearing off the marathon of her PR earlier this year, The Woodlands, where she ran a nice time of 3:53:01, Judith Albarran came into Tunnel Light still like a runner scorned.

Judith came to Washington for bear - or war with those "night goggle"-like sunglasses - and came away with a Boston qualifier - almost an hour off her first effort at Tunnel Light.

Burned by all the cancellations in 2020, she carried the fire in her belly all throughout the summer and registered a new PR at Tunnel Light for the third time here.

Four years ago, she was happy to finish Tunnel Light in 4:33:53 – a PR by 33 minutes and 39 seconds.

A year later, she lodged her first sub-4-hour marathon with a time of 3:59:11, bettering her time earlier in January at Houston where she PR’d with a 4:19:31.

So that streak of three straight PR’s begat a pair of tantalizing “just over four hour” times in 2019.

Invariably, the heartbreak of being so close twice after set the way now for another three straight PR’s starting with her 2020 Houston performance of 3:58:06, followed by The Woodlands and then her sparkling time of 3:39:20.

Even though it is just 40 seconds under Boston’s qualifying standard for 2022, Judith can now proudly call herself now a “Boston Qualifier”.

The second-best PR improvement belonged to Paolo Biagi who - with Tammy Grado, Yaya Herrera and Gabby Westbrook - is on the cusp of his debut Ironman at Ironman Texas in a little over two weeks.

Paolo is a guy here that looks like he's ready to kick Ironman Texas' ass.

Paolo ran the 2018 The Woodlands Marathon in 4:35:04 – a respectable 10-minute plus per mile pace.

But even amid Ironman training, and treating Tunnel Light like a long training run, he shaved 44 minutes and 34 seconds off that time for a sub-4-hour time of 3:50:29.

Even though in 2018’s Tunnel Light Marathon, she recorded her 21st sub-4-hour marathon in 34 finishes to that point, Michelle McGill will tell you that they’re never easy.

Michelle McGill:  Steady as she goes.  And with a Marine in close quarters.

However, she has Tunnel Light down to a schedule.

In 2017, she finished in 3:55:29.  Three years ago in 3:51:37 and this year, like clockwork, a time of 3:52:41.

Our third and final debut marathoner was Auggie Campbell, who posted a nice sub-10-minute per mile pace time of 4:14:21.

His wife, Jane, didn’t have her best day, but was able to finish ahead of Auggie – just so she could be the first to greet him at the finish line.

Tammy Grado ran here in 2017 and 2018.

Both times, she BQ’d.

The name on the bib says it all for Tammy Grado.

But 2021 was more about three other letters – and taking it as a very easy long training run in her preparation for her debut Ironman in less than three weeks.

Still as elegant crossing the finish line as in years past, Tammy stopped the clock in 4:17:34.

Three years ago, Layton Gill had the race of his life – to date – at Tunnel Light as he broke four hours for the first time in 3:59:14.

You couldn't see the internal smile that Layton had after LSU had defeated McNeese State the night before!

Times change, though, and not just what’s on the finish line clock.

Gill has continued to develop his coaching acumen to add to Volte’s dearth of knowledge led by Dwyer and longtime former Woodlands Fit director Rich Cooper.

With a family that includes wildly busy kids, sometimes things must give.

And in 2021, as Volte’s good friend Rick Cook is always apt to say, “It wasn’t the time you wanted, but you finished.”  

We’re certain Gill can attest to that sentiment as he finished in 4:26:03.

His worth to Volte is far more important than what’s on the clock at some finish line in Washington state.

66 times a Volte athlete has now crossed a Tunnel Light Marathon finish line.

And Sunshine is on the horizon for 2022 already.

Mike Csikos has already committed for next year.  Will he be the 67th finisher or will somebody go and beat Mike – politely, of course – to the finish.

Time, and training, will tell.
